Escape Room – Christopher Edge

He’s making it sound like the end of the world, but I can’t stop myself from smiling. This is how these escape rooms always begin – the game master setting up the story and explaining what you need to do to win. This might be breaking into a bank fault to steal a priceless treasure or searching a scientific laboratory to discover the secret formula. Every escape room has its own unique mission. Now he’s going to tell us what we need to do to save the world…

It is the ultimate game for Ami who is introduced to four teammates at The Escape. This is an escape room activity where the group need to work together to solve clues and puzzles to discover the Answer. Can they locate what they need and save the world?

Wow – what an exhilarating, fast-paced adventure Escape Room was! There is so much to unpack about Christopher Edge’s latest novel but equally, I would hate to as there would be massive spoilers and seriously ruin the surprises and thrills you should encounter yourself. What I will say is, as always, Christopher has created a intricate, topical, emotional story which is without a doubt going to be one of the best reads of 2022.

Take care when reading – all the clues are cleverly sprinkled throughout. Find the Answer. Save the world. Surely escape rooms are meant to be fun & promote teamwork? Unfortunately, Ami and her new friends quickly realise that each room is tricker than they expected and they will be encountering life or death situations. What does Ibrahim bring to the group? Min? Oscar? Adjoa? Each has a role to play but will any of the five make it to the end and find the Answer?

Escape Room really transports the reader into this fantastical world – as Ami, you are literally learning everything as she discovers it so it really heightens the anticipation when you explore a room with her. From a fiery attic to a immense library of dust, an ancient Mayan tomb to a deserted shopping mall (where the most unexpected lurks in the darkness) and ending up on board a spaceship, the mission to learn the Answer seems unfathomable. The final twist will turn everything on its head but if, like me you’re a Marple or Saw fan so are used to observing ready for a twist, you may well work it out (I got a bit of it and am sure it’ll leave readers pondering for a long time after – I hope it empowers them!).

Suggested reading age: 9+

Escape Room is written by Christopher Edge and will be published by Nosy Crow on 3rd February 2022. I highly recommend you preorder your copy from all good booksellers now!
