Reek – Alastair Chisholm

Sparrow lives in the world after the Reek, a toxic pollution that covers the Earth. Only tech billionaire Axel Brodie knows how to make clean air and Sparrow works every day to keep her family alive. When an inventor friend discovers a new way to survive the Reek, Sparrow’s life becomes more deadly: someone doesn’t want the world to learn what Sparrow knows and they’ll do anything to silence her…

Master of sci-fi, Alastair Chisholm, is back with an amazing novella and through collaborating with Barrington Stoke, Reek is an accessible story for reluctant readers. Exploring dystopian Edinburgh with Sparrow will give you such a rush as you’ll be on the edge of your seat wondering if she can make her deliveries to earn payment for her family. I love Alastair’s stories (you’ll find my reviews of I am Wolf here and The Consequence Girl here!) and instantly felt transported to this terrifying new reality. I’m sure readers will spot parallels here to their own lives and the power corporations have over us; in this case, fresh air is now a commodity and Zephyr Industries can essentially control life. George’s illustrations are an excellent addition to the story too. A high-octane, twisty sci-fi thriller, Reek is a thoroughly entertaining read. Will you be able to guess how it all ends?
