Global – Eoin Colfer & Andrew Donkin

Two children. Two locations. One climate crisis. While Suki and her dog are being stalked by a hungry grolar bear in the Arctic Circle, Sami and his grandpa are struggling on their fishing trip in the Indian Ocean.

I am so grateful for the book corner of the #edutwitter community as I always value the book recommendations there and one of the gems, Illegal, is one of my favourite graphic novels. It is so powerful and also one of the most read books in my classrooms. When I heard the award-winning team were returning for Global, I knew I had to buy this. Wow! What a gripping, powerful book this is! Showing the real and devastating effects of climate change, Global is incredible showing how it is impacting two children, Sami and Yuki, in very different ways. Being in the Arctic Circle, Yuki is dealing with the melting ice caps and animals having to adapt while on the other side of the world, we see through Sami’s eyes how the events there are impacting him in the Bay of Bengal.

Once again, the illustrations are so eye-catching and hook the reader immediately. The story is so well-paced that you can’t put it down and the use of colour is particularly striking. You really do feel the life and death situations Yuki and Sami are in, especially the point where Yuki loses her glasses and you literally can’t see.

As well as a gripping story, Global also has an informative section at the end to explain what global heating is and what we must do. It’s extremely empowering for the reader. There isn’t a school not exploring this as it impacts on us all so it means Global is an essential book for bookshelves and must be recommended.
