The Traitor in the Game – Triona Campbell

Auggie whispers in my ear, dragging me back. “No pressure but they’re getting closer…” I pick the padlock on the main door. My heart thumps as I pull the hoarding back just enough to slip inside, palms sweating. The door makes a scraping sounc, so I don’t fully close it. Footsteps are coming closer. Who else would be here now? Police? I crouch. Watching through a small crack where the wood doesn’t meet the door frame. Two bodies, big, male? They’re hidden in dark tracksuits and wear black masks showing a skeleton mask.

In this suspenseful sequel to A Game of Life or Death (review here!), Asha Kennedy is still scrambling for answers after learning the truth about virtual reality game Shackle. Who exactly is Zu and who is the actual puppet master behind Zu Tech? Where is Dark? Desperate to stop this conspiracy, Asha and her friends head to New York to enter an eSports tournament but her enemies are closer than ever…

You think the rabbit hole can’t get deeper? Brace yourself, we only scratched the surface of the conspiracy from A Game of Life or Death and now Asha and her Tower team are back – the stakes are even higher, the twists more shocking and more lives will be lost. This series just gets better and better as Triona moves us beyond London to New York and as Asha deals with social media backlash from taking down Zu Tech, she is determined to finally get answers. Like the head of a hydra, the threat is multiplying and I couldn’t put The Traitor in the Game down. Is one of the team actually an enemy? Where is Dark? It’s so hard not to spoil anything in this review so all I’ll say is there are some answers, there’s death, a love triangle, virtual reality and an ending which will leave you desperate for book 3. Like Lisbeth Salander or Katniss Everdeen, Asha Kennedy is a girl on a mission and an inspiring heroine in young adult fiction. Perfect for fans of Orphan Black, The Hunger Games or Person of Interest, The Traitor in the Game is a superb sequel where no-one is safe and nothing is off limits…
